Skin treatment

Clinical peels. Depth is the decision.

A clinical peel is chemical exfoliation at a set depth. An acid solution lifts the outer layers of the skin in a controlled, timed way. A session runs between 30 minutes and two hours depending on the peel — and which peel, at what depth, is decided by assessment, not preference.

The treatment

What is a clinical peel?

An acid solution — glycolic, salicylic and trichloroacetic acid are the common families — applied to clean skin for a set time, then removed. It loosens the bonds holding the outermost skin cells, and over the following days those cells lift away.

Peels are graded by depth. Superficial peels work on the outermost layer and settle quickly. Medium and deeper peels reach further, ask more of the skin, and take longer to settle. Deeper is not better — deeper is a bigger demand on the skin, and it has to be matched to what your skin can carry.

What a peel is for depends on the skin in front of it — surface texture, congestion and uneven tone are the usual territory. But the honest sequence runs the other way: assess first, then decide whether a peel serves at all.

The appointment

What happens at a peel appointment?

Three stages, and the first one has already happened before any solution touches your skin. Some medical history changes how a peel is prepared — you’ll be asked about it at the consultation, before anything is booked.

01 The plan comes first

The peel — its depth, its timing — is set in your written skin plan. If the assessment says your skin isn’t ready for one, you’ll hear that instead, with the reason.

02 The peel

The skin is cleansed, the solution is applied and timed, then removed. Depending on depth, the appointment runs between 30 minutes and two hours.

03 The settling

The days after are part of the treatment. Depending on depth, skin may look flushed, feel tight, and visibly flake as the outer layer lifts away.

The details

What does it cost, and how long does it take?

Session length depends on depth: between 30 minutes and two hours. Every peel follows a $150 consultation and a written skin plan, so the depth is settled — in writing — before you’re in the chair. [TALIHA: clinical peel price — single price, or priced by depth?]

Aftercare

What happens after a peel?

Aftercare depends on depth, and you leave knowing yours. The general shape:

  • Skin may look flushed and feel tender or tight at first. A cool compress helps.
  • Flaking follows over the days after — lighter peels barely, deeper peels visibly. Let it lift on its own.
  • No makeup for at least 24 hours.
  • Keep the treated skin out of direct sun while it settles.

Superficial peels carry little to no downtime. Medium and deeper peels take longer to settle, so the timing gets planned around your calendar — which is one of the things the consultation is for.

Order and timing

Where does a peel sit in a plan?

Rarely first, and rarely alone. A peel is one instrument, and its usefulness depends on order and timing — what the skin has been asked to tolerate lately, what comes before it, and what should wait until after. That’s what the written plan settles: whether a peel earns its place, at what depth, and when.

Sometimes the honest answer is not yet. Skin that’s irritated or over-exfoliated has nothing to gain from a peel, and the plan will say so.

How a skin plan works

Questions

Asked about clinical peels.

Answered the way they would be answered in the room.

What is a chemical peel?

A controlled application of an acid solution that loosens the bonds between surface skin cells so they shed more readily than they would on their own. Strength and depth vary enormously — the phrase covers everything from a light treatment with no visible peeling to procedures done under medical supervision. What Glow offers sits at the gentler end of that range.

What is in a chemical peel?

Typically an acid or blend of acids — glycolic, lactic, salicylic and mandelic are the common ones — at a concentration and pH chosen for the skin in front of you. Which one is used is part of the assessment rather than a menu choice, because they behave differently on different skin and for different reasons.

What does a chemical peel do?

It speeds up the rate at which the surface layer of skin turns over. That can improve texture, the appearance of surface pigment and how congested skin looks. What it does not do is change anything structural, and the effect is not permanent — which is why a peel is a component of a plan rather than the plan itself.

Do chemical peels work for melasma?

Melasma is a diagnosis and identifying it belongs to a doctor. Speaking generally about pigment: peels can reduce how visible surface pigment is, but pigment sitting deeper is far less responsive, it recurs readily with sun and hormonal change, and in some skin an aggressive approach makes it worse. Anyone promising to clear it is describing something that does not reliably happen.

How often can you have a chemical peel?

Spaced by weeks rather than days, and the interval is part of the point — the skin has to complete its cycle between treatments. Having them more frequently does not compound the result and reliably wears the barrier down. A plan states the interval, and if you are being encouraged to come more often than it says, ask why.

Can you have a peel on sensitive skin?

Sometimes, at lower strengths, and often the honest answer is not yet. Skin that reacts easily is the category where doing less is most often right — and where an enthusiastic treatment plan does the most damage. Frequently the first job is settling the routine at home before anything is done in the clinic.
