Vitamin C, and the bottle that turns orange.
Vitamin C is one of a short list of skincare ingredients with real research behind it, and one of the most commonly wasted. It degrades in light and air. It is sold on a percentage that stopped meaning much a long time ago. And the expensive one is not automatically the better one. Here is what it does, what it does not, and how to tell whether yours is still working.
What it does, and what it doesn’t.
Vitamin C in skincare means ascorbic acid, or one of several derivatives of it. Its main job is antioxidant — it neutralises some of the reactive molecules skin produces when it meets ultraviolet light and pollution. It is also a required cofactor in collagen synthesis, which is where the firmness marketing comes from. That biology is real; the visible cosmetic effect is modest and slow.
Where the evidence is genuinely decent is tone. Evenness of colour, and the general dullness people describe as skin looking tired. That is the effect most consistently reported in the research.
What it does not do is a longer list. It does not exfoliate. It does not do a retinoid’s job, so it is neither an alternative to retinol nor a substitute for a prescription retinoid your doctor has prescribed. It is not a sunscreen. The antioxidant role works behind SPF, not instead of it.
It also does not clear pigment. Surface pigment can become less obvious over time. Pigment that sits deeper, or that is driven by hormones, is far less responsive and recurs readily with sun. Naming what kind you have is a doctor’s job.
Timeframe: months, not weeks. If you have used a live product consistently for around three months and nothing has shifted, it is reasonable to conclude it is not doing much for you. Skin varies, and some does not respond to this ingredient the way the studies suggest.
L-ascorbic acid, and the gentler ones.
“Vitamin C” is one word on the front of a bottle and several different molecules on the back. The ingredient list is the only place the difference shows.
- L-ascorbic acid
- The pure form and by a distance the most studied. It needs a low pH — around 3.5 — to get into skin at all, which is also why it can sting, and it is the least stable of the lot. Most of the research everyone cites was done on this, which is worth knowing when a gentler product borrows the same evidence.
- Sodium and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate
- Water-soluble salts. More stable, work at a pH closer to neutral, much less likely to sting. The trade-off is that skin has to convert them back to ascorbic acid and the conversion is not complete, so the delivered dose is lower than the number on the front implies.
- Ascorbyl glucoside and ethyl ascorbic acid
- Stable, mild, slow. Both turn up in products aimed at skin that reacts to things, often at higher listed percentages than an L-ascorbic acid serum, and they need to be. Reasonable middle ground, less studied than the marketing implies.
- Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate
- Oil-soluble, stable, does not sting, and turns up in most of the expensive serums. The honest caveat is that the independent research behind it is thinner than for L-ascorbic acid. More stable is not the same thing as more effective, and the marketing conflates them constantly.
A gentler derivative used most days does more than a potent one that stung once and now lives in the cupboard. That is not a recommendation for your skin — it is just how the arithmetic works.
A serum that has gone orange has stopped working.
Ascorbic acid reacts with light, air and water. As it does, it breaks down into compounds that are coloured — the serum goes from clear or straw-pale to yellow, then orange, then brown. That colour is the breakdown product. It is not the active any more.
Slight yellowing is not necessarily the end of it; deep orange or brown is. There is no way to reverse it. Refrigeration slows the reaction and does not stop it, and finishing the bottle out of thrift means putting a spent product on your face every morning for a month.
This is why the packaging is part of the product. Opaque, airless, and small. A clear glass dropper bottle is the worst available combination — light gets in constantly, and every squeeze of the pipette pulls fresh air into the bottle. Small sizes are a feature rather than a con: you are meant to finish it in weeks. Water-free formulas and powders you mix yourself are more stable again, because water is what drives the reaction.
Twenty per cent of nothing is still nothing.
Concentration is the most heavily marketed and least informative figure on a vitamin C bottle. For L-ascorbic acid, absorption rises with concentration up to around twenty per cent and then flattens, while irritation keeps climbing. So twenty is closer to a ceiling than a target, and a great many people do better at ten or fifteen.
What matters at least as much: the pH, whether the formula is stabilised — vitamin E and ferulic acid are the usual pair, and there is reasonable evidence they help — and above all whether the ascorbic acid in there is still ascorbic acid. A twenty per cent serum that has spent a month on a lit bathroom shelf is a nought per cent serum. The percentage describes what went in at the factory, not what is left in your hand.
Price behaves the same way. The relationship between what a vitamin C serum costs and whether it does anything is weak. Some inexpensive formulations are well made and properly packaged. Some costly ones are largely bottle, fragrance and story.
What money legitimately buys: airless packaging, a stabilised formula, fresher stock, and a texture you will tolerate every morning. What it does not buy is a heavier glass bottle, a brand name, or botanical extras too dilute to matter. For most people a mid-priced serum in sensible packaging, replaced when it is finished, outperforms an expensive one rationed to make it last.

The conventional position is morning, on clean skin, before sunscreen. The logic is straightforward: the antioxidant job is about the exposure you are heading out into. That is a sensible default rather than a rule, and vitamin C used at night is not wasted — it is simply doing less of what it is best at.
A low-pH L-ascorbic acid serum can tingle briefly on some skin, and that usually settles. Burning that persists, redness that outlasts the application, or a rash is a different thing, and the answer there is to stop rather than push through.
Combining vitamin C with acids and retinoids is where most people come unstuck, and it is exactly the part that depends on what your skin is doing, what you already own, and what you will realistically keep up. A page cannot answer that honestly.
And sometimes the answer is that you do not need this yet. If your barrier is compromised, or you are already using more actives than you can keep track of, adding an acidic antioxidant is rarely the first move. If you are not wearing sunscreen daily, buy sunscreen first — vitamin C is a second line of defence behind a first line you do not have. Neither answer sells anything, which is why they are worth putting in writing.
Vitamin C is not generally one of the ingredients set aside during pregnancy, but what stays and what goes is an individual conversation with your nurse and your GP rather than something a web page should settle.

Does vitamin C serum actually work?
For tone, it is one of the better-supported ingredients in skincare — evenness of colour and general dullness are where the research is strongest. The effect is gradual, over months rather than weeks. It is not an exfoliant, it does not do a retinoid's job, and it is not a sunscreen. Plenty of serums do nothing, usually because the product has oxidised rather than because the ingredient is useless. Some people see very little.
Should I use vitamin C in the morning or at night?
Morning is the usual answer, before sunscreen, because the antioxidant job is about the ultraviolet and pollution exposure you are about to get. Used at night it is not wasted, just doing less of what it is best at. What matters more than timing is whether you use it most days and whether the bottle is still live. A perfectly scheduled serum used twice a month achieves nothing.
My vitamin C serum has turned brown — can I still use it?
You can, but it has stopped doing the thing you bought it for. Ascorbic acid reacts with light, air and water and breaks down into coloured compounds — clear to yellow to orange to brown. That colour is the breakdown product, not the active. Slight yellowing may still be fine; deep orange or brown is finished, and nothing reverses it. Refrigeration slows the process without stopping it.

So twenty is a ceiling rather than a goal, and many do better at ten or fifteen. The percentage also tells you what went in at the factory, not what survives in your hand. Can you use vitamin C and retinol together?
Many people do, most commonly by using vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night, which sidesteps the question rather than answering it. Whether your skin tolerates both depends on how reactive it is, what strength you are on, and what else is in the routine. Getting it wrong usually shows up as a compromised barrier that then needs weeks of repair, so it is worth asking someone who has looked at your skin.
Does vitamin C help with pigmentation and dark spots?
Sometimes, and less dramatically than the advertising suggests. Surface pigment can become less obvious with consistent use over months. Pigment that sits deeper, or that is driven by hormones, responds far less and returns readily with sun. Identifying which kind you have is a diagnosis and belongs to a doctor rather than to a serum. Anyone promising to clear pigment with a bottle is describing something that does not happen reliably.
Is an expensive vitamin C serum better?
Not automatically. The link between price and performance is weak here. Money can legitimately buy airless packaging, a stabilised formula, fresher stock and a texture you will tolerate daily. It does not buy results through a heavier bottle, a brand name, or botanical extras in trace amounts. A mid-priced serum in sensible packaging, replaced when it runs out, generally beats an expensive one being rationed. If the cost makes you use it sparingly, it works against you.
